Pick Opus Clip if you need auto-posting, an API, idea-to-video agents or 4K today. Pick Hookspring if you want free editing, captions and export with no watermark, plus a reason behind every clip's score. Both tools turn one long video into a batch of vertical clips. The real differences are what's free, what's paid, and what's live right now.
This comparison covers features, pricing, credits, and who each tool suits. It's built from each company's own pages, not from a hands-on test.
We make Hookspring. Opus facts are from Opus's own pages as of 2026-10-19; check them before you buy.
The short version
- Opus Clip has more of the workflow live: a scheduler and API on Pro, 4K on Business, and Agent Opus for idea-to-video.
- Hookspring's editor, captions and 1080p export are free with no watermark. Opus's free plan watermarks exports and leaves out timeline editing.
- Every Hookspring clip gets a hook score with a plain-English reason. Opus shows its virality score on paid plans only.
- Opus charges 1 credit per minute of imported video. Hookspring credits pay only for transcription and hook scoring, and failed steps are refunded.
- Scheduling, API, idea-to-video, B-roll and 4K are marked Soon in Hookspring. They aren't available yet.
Quick verdict
Opus Clip is the broader product today. Hookspring is narrower: it focuses on finding the hook and getting a clean clip out fast, without paying to edit or export.
- Choose Opus Clip if you schedule posts across many platforms, need an API or MCP connector, clip low-dialogue footage, or need 4K.
- Choose Hookspring if you clip videos where people talk, like podcasts, interviews or lessons, and want free unwatermarked exports.
- Try both if you're unsure. Each has a free way in, so run the same video through both and compare the clips you'd actually post.
Feature comparison at a glance

Pricing and credits compared
Opus Clip sells fixed monthly plans with a credit allowance. Hookspring is free to start, and you buy credits only for its two AI steps.
Opus's pricing page lists four plans, shown here at monthly prices.
| Opus Clip plan | Monthly price | What the plan adds |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Up to 1080p export with watermark, 10GB uploads, media expires after 3 days |
| Starter | $15 | Virality score, posting to YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, media kept 29 days |
| Pro | $29 | Scheduler, API and MCP connector, AI B-roll, 30GB uploads, 100GB storage |
| Business | Custom | 4K scheduling and download, CMS integration, unlimited storage |
How Opus Clip credits work
Opus bills by the length of the video you import. Its credits help article states the rule as "1 credit per minute of the original video imported."
A few details change the math:
- Videos under a minute round up to 1 credit.
- Partial minutes on longer videos round down.
- A timeframe slider lets you import only part of a video, so you pay for fewer minutes.
- The help page lists 150 credits for Starter and 300 for Pro, per pack each month.
- Credits from monthly plans expire after 60 days. Credits from yearly plans expire after 12 months.
- Posting to X costs 3 credits per clip per X account, refunded if the post fails.
Here's an illustration using those rules. A 45-minute podcast costs 45 credits. A 45-minute, 40-second episode also costs 45, since the partial minute rounds down. On Starter's 150 credits, that's three full episodes with 15 credits left.
What Free includes is less certain. As of 2026-10-19, the AI Reframe page states "60 minutes of video processing time refreshed monthly" plus a 7-day Pro trial. The pricing page frames Free as "Post one clip every day for free." We couldn't fully confirm the free numbers, so treat them as a starting point.
Agent Opus uses its own billing. Per the Agent Opus credits FAQ, it charges per second of output video.
How Hookspring credits work
Hookspring credits pay for two steps only: transcription and hook scoring. They're priced by video length, and you see the cost before you start.
Editing, captions and export don't use credits and aren't capped. If a step fails, the credits come back to you. Current prices are on the Hookspring pricing page.
The practical difference is where the paywall sits. On Opus, watermark-free export and timeline editing depend on your plan. On Hookspring, they're free, and credits only cover the AI work.
Where Opus Clip is stronger
Opus has more of the workflow live today, especially after the clip is made.
Scheduling and auto-posting
Pro and Business include a scheduler that posts to many platforms. Starter can post to YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, but without the scheduler. Hookspring's scheduled publishing is Soon, so today you download the MP4 and upload it yourself.
API and MCP connector
Pro includes a Video Editing API, a Scheduler API and an MCP connector. Business adds CMS integration. If you're wiring clipping into your own tools or an AI assistant, Opus supports that now. Hookspring's API is Soon.
Agent Opus for idea-to-video
Agent Opus is live with open sign-up. Opus calls it the "first AI video agent for social media." It starts from an idea or from audio, with explainer, AI ad and audio-to-video templates.
That covers faceless and news-style creators who have no footage to clip. Hookspring's idea-to-video agents for those shorts are Soon.
ClipAnything for footage with little talking
ClipAnything finds clips from a prompt, using visual, audio and emotional signals. Opus says it works on low-dialogue footage like vlogs and sports, with clips up to 15 minutes long.
Hookspring doesn't list a prompt-based or visual clipping mode. Its tools center on word-level transcripts and the opening seconds of each clip, which fit videos where people talk.
4K, AI B-roll and large uploads
Business includes 4K scheduling and download. Pro and Business add AI B-roll, which Opus says is powered by Agent Opus. Uploads go up to 30GB per video on those plans, and you can import public mp4 URLs.
Hookspring exports 720p or 1080p today. 4K and auto B-roll are both Soon.
Review volume
On Trustpilot, a 2026-10-19 snapshot shows Opus with a 4.0 TrustScore from 511 reviews. About 63% are five-star and 20% are one-star, so read both ends.
Hookspring doesn't have a review base that size to point to.
Where Hookspring is stronger
Hookspring is stronger on what you get for free, and every clip's score comes with a written reason on any plan.
Free editing, captions and export with no watermark
In Hookspring, editing, captions and export are free and unlimited. That includes these tools:
- Trim, split, delete and reorder clips on a simple timeline.
- Cut straight from the transcript with the ✂ on any caption line.
- Drag a focus box onto the speaker for a tracked 9:16 frame.
- Pick word-timed Hook, Minimal or News captions, then edit them line by line.
- Add text overlays, image and video inserts, transitions and per-clip volume.
To finish a clip, open the Captions tab, pick a template, then go to Export → Download. You get a 720p or 1080p vertical MP4 with captions burned in and no watermark. It renders in your browser.
On Opus's Free plan, exports go up to 1080p but carry a watermark, and text and timeline editing isn't included. If you're testing shorts before paying for anything, that's the clearest gap between the two.
A hook score with a reason on every clip
Every clip Hookspring finds gets a hook score based on its opening 1 to 3 seconds. Each score comes with a plain-English reason. In the review list, sort by score to see your strongest openings first.
The reason matters as much as the number. It tells you why a clip ranked high or low, so you can decide whether you agree. The score is part of the hook scoring step, not a feature locked to a higher plan.
Opus's virality score sits on Starter, Pro and Business, not on Free. Either way, no score can promise views. Here's how AI hook and virality scores work, and what they can't predict.
Credits only for AI steps, refunded on failure
You pay only for the AI work, and only when it succeeds. To start, go to Create → Long video → Find clips. The credit cost shows before you confirm, and each step reports its progress.
If a step fails, you get those credits back. Opus's credit article mentions a refund when a post to X fails. Check its help center for how other failed jobs are handled.
Who each tool is for
Find your profile, then test the pick on a real video.
- Podcasters, coaches and educators clipping their own talks: Hookspring, for free unwatermarked exports and a reason behind each pick.
- Teams posting daily across many platforms: Opus Pro, for the scheduler.
- Developers and agencies building a pipeline: Opus Pro or Business, for the API, MCP connector and CMS integration.
- Vlog, sports and other low-dialogue clippers: Opus, since ClipAnything is built for low-dialogue footage.
- Faceless and news-style channels starting from an idea: Opus, since Agent Opus is live and Hookspring's version is Soon.
- Creators testing shorts on a tight budget: Hookspring. Finding clips uses credits priced by video length, but editing and export never do.

FAQ
Is there a free alternative to Opus Clip?
Hookspring is free to start. Finding clips uses credits, priced by video length. Editing, captions and export never cost credits or add a watermark. Opus also has a free plan, but its exports carry a watermark.
Does Opus Clip's free plan add a watermark?
Yes, per its pricing page as of 2026-10-19. Watermark-free export isn't included on Free, and free caption templates are marked "With watermark." Free exports go up to 1080p, and media expires after 3 days.
How do Opus Clip credits work, and do they expire?
Opus charges 1 credit per minute of imported video. Videos under a minute round up to 1 credit, and partial minutes on longer videos round down. You can shorten the timeframe to pay for less. Monthly-plan credits expire after 60 days, and yearly-plan credits after 12 months.
Is Opus Clip worth paying for?
It can be, if you'll use what the paid plans add: the virality score, scheduler, API, AI B-roll or 4K. If you mainly need clean exports of talking videos, a free option may cover it. Run one real video through the free plan first.
Which is better for podcasts, Opus Clip or Hookspring?
Both turn a long episode into vertical clips. Hookspring suits podcasters who want every clip scored with a reason and free unwatermarked exports. Opus suits podcast teams that want scheduling, an API or 4K on a paid plan.
